My final portfolio: Art History

Artist's Statement

My work over the past year has helped me practice my skills as an artist, and also review and enjoy history from a new perspective. When I practice my art for this class I try to see many examples of similar work by the historical artists, and students today who are trying to re-construct different art forms. In this collection I liked how I used different materials, to help me experience how the world was, to those artists of history. In my work I try to use my skills of working with color, and try to capture the ancient artist’s methods, technology and techniques.
The media that I use are chosen to help me work with bright colors. I like to use acrylic, oil pastels and marker pens. I use short strokes and I like to add lots of details. That helps me because historical art has a lot of details. Many of the artists of ancient times liked to fill up the entire spaces where the work was created. I use marker pens to add a lot of detail and the acrylic to add color whenever I can. I use a whole lot of warm and cold colors in my work. In this collection I got to experiment with new media like gold foil, clay, ink, charcoal, and so on. In order to experience what the artists had in the past, we used materials like charcoal, ink, clay, stones for mosaic and so on. Most of them helped me learn how to create art with different styles as artists have done in the past.
The central interest in my work is to try to copy the experience of the artists of the past. They used certain materials, certain subjects like hunting animals, and flowers. They also worked on realistic or symbolic styles. My goal is to try to be inspired and experience art as the historic artists produced.
Viewers should engage with my work intellectually. I try to capture the techniques and structures of artists of the past and try to use modern media to create the same. Viewers should see how I am inspired by the work that I am trying to reproduce.
The two styles I like the most are cubism and impressionism. The work of Picasso in cubism is very interesting to me. I also like impressionism by Claude Monet. I like the short strokes and light and color in impressionist painting.
Color is the formal aspect that interests me most. Many historical art works have experimented with a lot of color, such as stained glass, Egyptian masks, and so on. I use color and details to learn and produce the technique and subjects used by the artists of history. In conclusion, this work has helped me analyze and understand people of the past and how they have used art to express themselves.
